Stay Safe on Your Mobility Scooter
While accidents aren’t a common occurrence for mobility scooters, there’s always the risk that one may take place. That’s why you should take proper precaution and ensure that you and your mobility scooter remain safe. We're here to offer some tips on how to do so:
Be Visible
Mobility scooters come in a wide range of bright colors, but even that’s not enough for everyone to see you. If you ever find yourself outside after night falls, the vibrant paint that shines in the sun will become quite difficult to see. Add reflective strips around your mobility scooter, as well as a small light to increase your visibility at night.
Ride on the Sidewalk
This can sometimes be easier said than done, especially if the sidewalks are narrow or there are none at all. However, strive to use them when at all possible. Cars, trucks and other vehicles on the road go much faster than you. Even if they don’t hit you, they may get into an accident in their haste to pass you.
Use the Pedestrian Crosswalk
When crossing the street, make sure you go to the end of the block and use the pedestrian crosswalk. This can be inconvenient if your next stop is directly across the street, but it’s not worth the risk. You can easily take a driver by surprise, and they may not be able to stop their vehicle fast enough.
Don’t Assume Others Can See You
If you’re on the sidewalk, it’s quite easy to sneak up on pedestrians, especially if they are preoccupied or listening to headphones. Should you find yourself on the road, you need to be especially vigilant around cars. While it might seem obvious that they should spot you, you never know what’s going on inside the vehicle. The driver may be preoccupied with rowdy children, the radio station, texting or any number of things that distract them. Use extra caution on the street.
